Weekly Devotional: Forgiveness

Forgiveness can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of our walk with God. It calls us to let go of anger and hurt, even when they feel underserved. In a society that emphasizes holding grudges and seeking revenge, forgiveness shines the light of God in this darkened world.

Forgiveness as Obedience

In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asks Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who sins against him. “Up to seven times?” Peter suggests, likely thinking this was a generous offer. But Jesus replies, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” This response is not so much about the numbers but about heart posture. Jesus teaches that forgiveness is not a one-time thing but a continual process. It isn’t about excusing the offense or pretending it didn’t happen; it’s about releasing its hold on our hearts. When we forgive, we reflect the grace of God, who forgives us daily.

Forgiveness as a Gift of Freedom

Holding onto grudges is like carrying a heavy burden; it weighs us down emotionally, spiritually and even physically. Scripture encourages us to "get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger," (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Forgiving others isn’t only for their benefit, but for ours as well. It frees us from the weight of bitterness and allows God’s peace to dwell in our hearts. Forgiveness doesn’t mean we condone sinful actions; it means we trust in God to handle justice while we do our best to shine the light on others, leading by example for goodness.

The Ultimate Model of Forgiveness

Jesus is our ultimate example of forgiveness. He died on the cross for all of our sins so that we could have a place in Heaven with Him in death. Even though the world mocked and beat him, He forgave them all for their actions. Even in the worst circumstances, He forgave.

If Christ can forgive those people, we can find it in our hearts to forgive those who sin against us. He reminds us that forgiveness isn’t about fairness but about grace. It’s an act of love that mirrors the Gospel.

Forgiveness can be very difficult at times, but it’s powerful. When we forgive, we reflect the heart of our Savior and step into the freedom He offers us. Ask God for help in forgiving those who have wronged you and for him to empower you to let go, move forward and live in the fullness of His peace.
