What is the difference between religion and having a relationship with God?

In the newest episode of Trending Faith, Dean of the College of Theology Jason Hiles, PhD, and University Pastor Tim Griffin set out to answer this question. 

“There’s something very different about a personal relationship that is, of course, part of an organized religion, but it’s different because you’re relating to a God who loves. He leads with love,” Dr. Hiles explained. “There is no question that that relationship can be sustained whether my religion is robust or adequate or not. It’s just a lock because He’s good.”

Pastor Tim added that there may be some overlap between the relationship with God and religion, but agreed that the most important element is continuing to grow a personal relationship with God.
